Our First Steps Project, established for over 6 years, offers a comprehensive programme that includes accredited Retail and Warehouse Training, Supported Volunteering, and ESOL classes.
The course curriculum begins with an introduction to the charity, the shop, and the local community. It is then structured into three key areas: theoretical learning through classroom activities and some written assignments, hands-on work experience involving tasks such as merchandising, operating the till, and providing customer service. Lastly, the curriculum covers topics such as CV writing, job applications, and interview skills to prepare participants for future employment opportunities.
Participants in the project also benefit from educational visits to prominent facilities such as Martin’s Recycling Centre, Veolia Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility. (RERF) incinerator, and other charity shops.
Accredited Retail Training
We offer four accredited Certa Level One courses in Retail and Warehouse Training annually. The courses typically run for approximately seven weeks, allowing for flexibility in pacing to accommodate individual needs. Sessions are scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10am to 2pm to accommodate those who need to fit around school times and exclude school holidays.
Our program focuses on practical work experience and is tailored to the preferences of participants, allowing them to develop skills in areas of interest. Classes are kept small, with an average of 6-8 participants, and are provided completely free. Additionally, lunch is included during each session.
Supported Volunteering
We are grateful for the dedicated team of volunteers who generously contribute their time and effort to support the operations of St Luke’s CARES on Dewsbury Road. With an average of 35-40 volunteers annually, we prioritise creating a mutually beneficial experience that ensures we are offering a fulfilling volunteer opportunity.
For individuals looking to enhance their prospects in the job market, we understand the importance of including hands-on experience in CV’s, application forms, and interviews. We also recognise that for others, building confidence may be a primary goal before pursuing employment opportunities. And, we are able to support both objectives with our supported volunteering.
ESOL Classes
We offer conversational ESOL classes for individuals of all skill levels as part of our First Steps Project. Last year, we successfully conducted 40 classes, which were well-received. Our classes cater to diverse abilities and are consistently in high demand, leading to full enrolment throughout the year. Additionally, our dedicated ESOL tutor, Corrina, provides personalised one-on-one sessions tailored to each individual’s specific needs. These sessions may involve assistance with job applications, navigating medical appointments, opening a bank account, or searching for housing, all focused on enhancing understanding and expanding vocabulary.
