Community space upgrade at St Luke’s CARES

24th November 2023

We are pleased to say that our community space, upstairs at our shop on Dewsbury Road, has undergone significant improvements to promote safety and hygiene and the overall functionality.

These improvements have made the area considerably more organised and inviting. Thanks to a grant from the Inner South Community Committee, we have updated the kitchen, with new units, a new sink, and at last hot water! As well as having fantastic bespoke storage that has been designed and made to suit all the needs of our different groups.

The space can now serve as a valuable community resource, having a functional environment that caters to their needs. The Shine Project, for instance, prepares snacks and meals in the facility, and having an improved kitchen will empower them to diversify their menu options, prioritize healthier alternatives, and enhance their culinary skills.

Also providing better storage space for the youth projects means they can do a wider variety of projects over extended periods. It is also really important for us to foster a sense of ownership among the girls towards the space, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging.

And it’s the same for the other projects, for the people coming to Warm Afternoons, we want to offer snacks and drinks and some storage space. The new look also benefits community members coming to our Community Cinema, and other events.

Over the last few years, we have understood that bringing the community together works best when we learn together or share experiences together. And this is what we determine to continue to do in the community space.
