The Shine Project currently runs six regular groups during the week.
On a Monday we have an open drop in at The Shine Nail Bar for all girls aged 11-18. This runs from 4:15-5:15.
Y7-9’s can get involved on a Tuesday from 4:15-5:30. This is a fun and friendly group where we do baking, craft, games and activities around self esteem/friendship. We love to go on trips and try new things. This group runs at Involve in Hunslet.
The Y10+ group runs on a Tuesday from 6:00-7:30 at The Shine Nail Bar. This is a drop in group, where girls can come for a chat, hot chocolate and get connected into wider aspects of The Shine Project
We also run a drop in group at Cockburn Highschool on a Monday 2:45-3:30, at Cockburn John Charles on a Wednesday 2:45-3:30 and at Ruth Gorse on a Thursday 2:45-3:45 these are just from students from the school. We discuss issues, do craft and have space to chat over hot chocolate. At
As part of our one to one mentoring we take on referrals for girls who are at low or medium risk of CSE and work through a programme of CSE focussed sessions with them in their education setting or in the community.
Please see Contact Us for a CSE referral form. Although the Shine Project is not exclusively a CSE project all the work we do looks to raise awareness and act as preventative work to Child Sexual Exploitation and grooming. Please note referrals will only be taken for girls living or attending school in LS10 and LS11.
The Shine Project provides mentoring for girls who would benefit from one to one support. We know that growing up can be really tough and just having a listening ear can sometimes make the all the difference. It might be difficulties at school, having a hard time with family, bullying, self-harm or another issue, just get in touch to find out more about the support we can provide.
The mentoring will take place either within a school, college setting or in the community depending on the needs of the individual young person. Each mentoring relationship will last at least three months and will usually take place weekly or fortnightly. Please see the Contact Us section for a referral form.
The Shine Project delivers an 8 week course looking at hot topics facing teenage girls aged 11 to 18, in schools and community settings across the south of the city.
The course runs over 8 (2 hour) sessions for groups of (up to) 10 girls and always finishes with a celebratory meal! We have a catalogue of resources that can be tailored to the particular group looking at issues of self-esteem, relationships, consent, sexual health, CSE and grooming, internet safety, sexting, friendships, mental health and bullying. Once girls have finished the course we invite them to get involved in one of our other groups so they can keep in touch with all things Shine. We also deliver PSHE lessons and help with drop down days around specific topics alongside our boys project RISE. Please get in touch for more info
Workers from The Shine Project will be seen out and about in the local community, chatting to young people and offering advice and support where they are.
Our outreach work aims to connect with young people, often those who are hardest to reach, giving them a chance to get involved in Shine activities. We use the nail bar as a drop in space to connect with local young people and provide a safe place to be.
